How has art impacted you?

Art has been a constant and transformative presence in my life. Since childhood, whether attending symphonies, exploring museums, or watching musicals, art has always stirred something deep within me. I still remember my first symphony performance in first grade—the music was so powerful and filled with meaning that I was moved to tears, not from sadness, but from the sheer beauty of it all.

Over the past 15 years, I have immersed myself in the arts yet I often found myself unsure of my path. I explored various avenues—running an Etsy shop, working for an arts nonprofit, and apprenticing under an extraordinary artist who became both a mentor and a dear friend. Her guidance even led me to a surprising venture into teaching, despite many thinking it was an unlikely path for me.

Soon, I began teaching only to discover that my passion for art was sometimes too intense for high schoolers. After seven years in the classroom, I still felt uncertain about my future. Opening a small, charming shop with a good friend seemed like a great idea. After just two days, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me, and that disappointment coincided with a challenging period for me.

As I approached 50, I made the crucial decision to prioritize my well-being. I finally began to heal and gain clarity. Learning to let go of the expectations of what I was “supposed” to do and instead embraced the art that made me truly happy—whether creating it, working with it, or sharing it with others.

Today, I finally understand what I want to be when I grow up. My journey is still evolving and I’m excited to share it with others who also believe in the transformative power of art. Art touches everyone in unique ways, and I look forward to witnessing the incredible impact it continues to have in our North Jefferson County communities.
